David Garner
Besides making
traditional pottery, David Garner and his son Jeff McDowell make Raku pottery,
a unique style that originated in Japan. David and Jeff also makes traditional
pottery sculptured facejugs. David's family has been been making pots for over
300 years in Seagrove. David, a former mayor of Seagrove, (considered by
some as the Pottery Capital of the US with over 120 local potters) apprenticed
with Master Potters Ben Owen Sr. and Weyman Cole, as well as some of the other
original Seagrove potters. After working with numerous Master Potters
David opened Turn and Burn Pottery, located in downtown Seagrove in March of
1985. Turn & Burn Pottery has work in many museums and collections
around the world. Turn & Burn Pottery has also been featured on
the NC Public Television program "Folk Ways". Turn & Burn Pottery is a
family business, as David and his son Jeff make the pottery, while David's
wife Deborah paints the designs.
All pieces are
hand-made and turned on the pottery wheel.
