I am an LVN with 18+ years experience in the healthcare industry, mainly in the long-term care/skilled nursing facility setting. Have experience with staff development, assistant director nursing, and mds/rap/care planning, staffing, and various other duties. I am gravely concerned in regards to staffing.

The last facility I worked at, I lost 10 CNA's due to Department of Justice, while in my building, interviewing these individuals, and having them admit that they paid someone else to take the state CNA exam for them. They all had ID, ss card, and cna certificates. This makes it very difficult to tell whether or not they truly have the schooling required. I knew something was wrong my first day on the job, because all the beds were made tucked in all the way aound, a few of the workers didn't understand english at all, or barely. I resolved this problem, by implementing a quiz for both CNA, and LVN/RN applicants. CNA quiz very basic, and only 6 questions. I had 36 cna's apply within one month that could not pass this test.
The LVN/RN quiz also basic, and I had 1 phillipino LVN and 2 RN's that could barely pass (i.e., what is the timeframe allowed for administering medication? answer 1 hour before and one hour after scheduled time-LVN's answer was 6 hours!). If anyone has had these types of issues come up, I would love to hear from you, as I am dedicated to tring to find solutions/ways of stopping this from happening. Please feel free to comment, share information, and resources. An RN here one week from the phillipines without an ID or ss card, or PIN, should not somehow be able to furnish a valid California RN License, and should know what the word febrile means. We are all at some time or other going to end up needing medical attention, and deserve and pay to receive medical care from licensed certified qualified healthcare workers.
